"Painting" -  with only repurposed photographs

I REPURPOSE PHOTOGRAPHS to make ART

When I was a kid, we didn’t recycle, but we re-used and repurposed.

Mayonnaise jars were saved as future canning supplies, fabric was saved for future sewing projects, lumber scraps were saved for any repairs needed.  Scraps were thrown into the compost heap, and there was very little that  ended up in the garbage can.

It wasn’t out of character then,  for me to “rescue”  all the family photos that ended up in a wastebasket during a home clean out.  I began to look for a way to repurpose them, and eventually, a unique medium for "painting"  was born.  This art form takes me back to my roots; to a time when finding creative uses for things was commonplace.

Not Your Typical Collage & Mixed Media

Each work of art has been "painted" using repurposed photographs.  I carefully audition each tiny bit for color, value, and texture, and build the image by gluing each tiny piece down.  From a distance the piece reads as a cohesive image; up close it reveals a field of photographic remnants.
